thx a bunch for the writeup. One more question now....ne one know where to get a new or remanufactured steering rack for a 98 1.8tq? I got a quote from a buddy for $500, dont know if that includes the core charge or not but anyone see them for cheaper?

 

Hi guys, I have a 96 A4 FWD in need of a steering rack replacement. I'm planning to buy a rebuilt rack online, but I'm confused with the description of the racks I'm seeing: some of them say "without steering strut" and others say "with steering strut". Anybody care to explain which one I should buy? TIA.

What is this "steering strut" and why do some cars made within the same year period have them and some do not.

 

you 12v'ers, get the steering strut. you will need it..
