Good job, people hardly ever tackle a steering rack DIY. Although, its hardly ever needed. I assumed the ps rack would take a LOT longer than what you guys are talking about. Where did you get this rebuilt rack for $250???

autopartswarehouse.comTheir supplier isa cv joint repair shop down south. They charge for core, you return yours, and they rebuild them. I really don't see how anyone could screw up rebuilding the racks, not a lot to the system, but we'll see. I've bought parts through them on quite a few occasions and never had any issues. Charged an additional $130 for core charge, but shipping is usually free.

Boot on the drivers side of my rack blew. I didn't put much into seeing if I could fix it, but they previous owner had driven it for awhile with "manual steering", and I figured I might as wellreplace everything. Dealer quoted $850 and a week for the rack, I had itfromthe net in3 days. I am thinking I can put in the rebuilt rack and a power steering pump for around $650..

The one thing I can't find online is the 22 mm banjo bolt. Going to call the dealer on Tuesday and see if they can get it. Figure it'll be the weekend at the earliest before I can get back to it.

Just to update this thread.

Getting the bolt from the dealer was a nightmare. Ordered it the Tuesday after labor day and they assured me it would be in by the weekend. It wasn't. Didn't come in until this Monday. Didn't get down to pick it up until Thursday, and of course they ordered the wrong one. They then had the right bolt by Friday.

Put everything back together today and it works great. My power steering pump was on back order and won't be here until Monday, but shockingly enough, my current power steering pump is fine. As long as I don't have any issues this week, I'm going to return the new pump and worry about the next project, which is new cv boots.

Hello,

My A6 4.2 rack is popping on the drivers side if you jurk the tire hard to the front or sitting still racking the wheel back and forth it is solid in the middle and I am not having any tire wear issues no leakage either. Should I worry. any way to adjust it.

Thank you

^ You might want to make our own thread for this subject to get more help, but thank you for bringing this back from the dead because my PS rack is leaking and I now have some sites to look into for a new/rebuilt one instead of a 900 dollar one from Audi.

But I will not be tackling this project, I don't have the tools or the experience required, so labor costs here I come
