anyine out there has replaced or has a diy for it.. my gf passat seems to need a new one... how hard is it to replace? its the same on a b5a4. and how long should it take.. how much techs r charging for labor...thanks..

 

damn thats not fun.. how does it "seem" to need a new rack? i dont know of any DIY articles but i do know its an all day affair.

it clunks (bad english,,,cant write for ****) when turning a put on a lift to see and i shaked the wheel by hands to see everithing fine up to the steering rack and thats where is coming from...looks like it's loose.... i'm in big trouble then anh??

 

I would suspect tie rod ends or inner tie rods if you have clunking or loseness in steering. The actual internalrack and pinnion gears are hardly ever an issue with these cars, tie rods are very common to fail though, especially the tie rod ends.
