Default A3 Replacement Steering Rack

Hi,

My local parts factor has offered me a Delco Remy replacement which (he says) fits a wide range of Golf Mk 4 and A3 models.
My ETKA lists a different rack for models with 17" wheels (mine).
Can anyone tell me what's the difference - and can I use the Delco part?

Thanks
Andy

I don't see differences regarding wheel size but do see gen2 and gen3 racks. What is your vin number. I can then see if a Mk4 uses the same part number but there are a lot of choices. It looks like in 2007 the rack supersedes to the 1K1-423-055M or MX reman, and that seems to be the gen3 rack. I have a picture of the difference between the two that might help. Knowing the year of your car and the vin is helpful though. I'm assuming it's 06-07 if the rack is leaking.

Thanks for the reply. I can see I didn't really give enough information.
The car is a 2002 TDI Sports model with 17" wheels.

The problem with the rack is that it is worn with lots of free play; not leakage.

Sorry - pressed the wrong button half way through my reply...

If I'm reading Etka correctly, the part for my car (17" wheels, Not Quattro, RHD) is 1J2 422 062 B. The two other possible numbers appear to be 1J2 422 061 AH and 1J2 422 060 HX.

I find Etka difficult to understand at times (e.g. what does PR-QZ4 mean?), but this is my best guess.

Thanks
Andy

That 1J2-422-062-B is the rack for your car. The other 2 numbers you listed are not highlighted in etka when your vin is put into the system, so they are not a recommended fit. The QZ4 option means power steering, limited steering lift mechanism. Not sure what that is exactly. Your vin shows sport shocks for the rear but not a full sports suspension. I was wondering if the rack was meant to change resistence if sport suspension was active. Don't know on that.

I do show that 062B rack used on the 98-06 VW Golf. But the golf has many other options also, so finding a used one from a golf could result in getting the wrong one because that car uses almost as many different part numbers as your car does.

Thanks for the fantastic research.
My problem is that I am NOT going to buy a VAG part - the cost is just too high for a 10 year old 160,000 mile car, but the Delco part offered by the factor appears to be the same one for all the FWD cars...
I know that sometimes the differences between part numbers are subtle (and probably not that important for me), but I'd like to be sure before spending the money and stripping the car!

No problem on that, I figured you wouldn't go with the VAG part since you mentioned the Delco unit, but wanted to let you know what to look for when searching. I have found when searching for used or aftermarket parts for our employees here that knowing option codes from the dealer makes all the difference in the world. Like for BMW having steering assist or not makes for a very different rack that doesn't have that option.
