Stereo advice pleeease?
Ok, so here's my request, followed by my horror story at Al and Eds today:
Request:
I have the stock system with the bose 'upgrade' in my 97 a4. The head unit only has a tape deck though, no cd player. I want a cd player obviously. I would rather integrate a cd player into the Bose system but was told that it would not work? I was going to get a Panasonic CD changer put in to work with the stock head unit, cuz i was told that that's the only disc changer that will work with Audi's stock system. Any advice from someone who knows or has done this? (put cd changer into their stock/bose system). I want to avoid Audi cuz they'll charge like, $800 i'm sure just to put in the Audi cd changer, but it'd work with the system i'm sure...
So on to my deathly mishap:
Instead of doing the cd changer first, i went with the full re-install from Al and Eds with new head unit and all new speakers. that's where i went wrong. Listed is the stuff that they screwed up, now i'm taking it back tomorrow to get it put back to stock/bose so i can figure out a changer and just leave it.
Stereo:
1. Time: Collins was quoted that the job was to be finished at 7:00 pm,
job was “completed” at 10:00 pm (an 11-hour install for head unit, 4
speakers, and alarm).
2. Unit: The in dash unit (Eclipse mode) was mal-functional and flashed
display lights on and off. This went unnoticed by installers, and was
pointed out by Collins to installers.
3. Rear Speakers: It was explained to Collins by Paul Attarchi
(Manager) that he was to receive Eclipse Component speakers in the rear
of the car, but when Collins picked up his car, there were 3-way
coaxial speakers installed instead. No phone call was received by
Collins to clear this substitution.
4. Wiring: Was done over wrong part of the engine which caused a
“whining” sound to come through the speakers inside the car. This shows
a lack of expertise and experience of installers.
5. Craftsmanship: In trunk of car, upholstery was not put back to its
original condition, but was instead left half-way on. This shows both a
rushed job and lack of attention to detail.
6. Speaker Feedback: The speakers gave a horrible feedback and/or “warbling”
sound, even when stereo was muted.
7. Popping sound: Whenever the stereo was turned ON or OFF, the
speakers “popped” loudly.
Alarm System:
Alarm system: Collins is satisfied with the installation of the alarm
system. However, it was discovered by Collins that the remote to the
alarm system has a “trunk open” button. When Collins attempted to use
this button, it failed to function. It was never explained to Collins
prior to installation that this function was not available. Other than
that particular grievance, the alarm is just as expected. Collins
would like to keep the alarm system in the car, but requests that the
“trunk open” button functions as it should.
ARgh, bastards at Al and Eds. Not to bash them, i'm sure they're nice people, but yeah, don't go to them in LA on La Cienega. (its the West Los Angeles location).

i had the same stereo and did some upgrades to my system. first i added 2 12" woofers, (mono) amp and cap. then i did my rear deck speakers with three way ones with an addional 4 ch amp. this amp also now powers the oem fronts. i think my system is decent. this is still with the oem HU. i do get a wine from my system sometimes very annoying. all the wireing is perfect ( also thought wireing was prob) the prob is the hu. this was said to me by my local audio place (realy good) and also said by tweeter (there ok ).
