Well, yeah, the way he said it made me think he highly doubted this could be the problem, when in fact its fairly likely.

That's awesome avant80 thanks a lot. I think I'm going to buy a new gas cap and run with that for a while and see if the problem reappears and if it does I'll try testing that EVAP purge valve. Did you get those diagrams from the bentley cd?
