A TT is a MAJOR P.I.T.A. to install...and depending on if you have a manual or auto/tip there are some security issues with them as well. I was seriously considering one but after reading install instructions and things to watch out for I decided its completely not worth it for me. Its a nifty tool and a good solution for cooling before shutting down, but its a very ambitious undertaking.

Question:
Define hard/spirited driving please. I don't know about you guys but getting up to 35mph in town as fast as you can doesn't really seem like it warrants such a title.

The way turbos are designed with the way the oil system and cooling system run that all you need to do is drive it normal. It will cool itself down enough to shut off properly. The turbo timer is sort of a lost cause for some people. More of a, "Hey your car is still running." thing than anything else. If you have one you know what I am talking about.

I bought a turbo timer as one of my first things. Wish I spent that money on something more worth while.
right right IF you drive normaly but otherwise its a good idea

I would most certianly call that spirited or hard. You are maxing the car out over and over through town. Think of it as the same thing as a small autox course. 100% throttle is harder driving than need be. You can agree that the car doesn't need WOT to get around town? So if you stomp on it to accelerate to a given speed you are indeed drving spirited. Whether it be 35, 55, or 105 mph.[sm=grin.gif]

Did I say "over and over"? I meant once or twice after you've warmed her up to standard temperature. Basically what I'm asking is, what kind of driving (rpm load) is gonna require some cooldown time. I personally let my baby rest for a minute after every use..but I'd like to know exactly when this is needed. Afterall..100% throttle isn't really pushing the engine hard on a non-chipped A4. High RPM's would indicate increased temperature..but not necessarily full throttle...

Just want to hear some situations others have been in where they feel the need to let their baby cool..

High throttle can indicate high temps. Most ECU's run a fuel trim for each particular rpm. Sort of like an internal S-AFC. The percentges change throughout the rpm band.

I am not saying it is needed at all. The car can cool down just fine with a 1min cruise around town or even a slow drive back to the house. I would not say that the turbo timer is a necessary part, but if you are looking to spend moeny on something to have a neat option like heated seats than that is all good.

yah I wouldnt call that spirited at least not by my standards... but if your near the end of your trip and you punch it and drive like a maddman for a minute then shut it off thats not real good either.

For ***** and gigles next time your out drivin at night spiritedly when you stop leave the car runnin and pop the hood to see the exhaust manifold (the thing that the turbos attached too) for those that dont know.

Has anyone ever considered an oil temp gauge tapped into the oil return line from the turbo? This is what i'm probably going to do bc it should give an accurate indication as to if and how long the turbo needs to cool down. should eliminate the guess work i suppose. just food for thought.

the turbo return line dumps directly into the oil pan so the reading is close enough

No, no I am not saying a 1 min hard drive. I concider a cruise a lite drive. If you run your car hard for an extended (whatever you feel extended is) then you can cool down the car with a 1 min or so slow or cruise that is sufficient enough. There are plenty of cars out there that make a significant amount of power more than any of us that do ntot require of use a Turbo Timer.

That is all I am saying....

This item is not needed it is an option most should get AFTER they have finished up there build. Not a requirement in the least bit.

OK never said you were sayin that midnight... BTW when I said minute it was not literal.
And the earlier A4s have a problem with the oil lines from the turbo cloging up some if your chipped and dont like to let your car cool down after "spirited driving" its a good idea to have.
