Hi

I havea 1998 Audi A4 with about 150k on it. When i first start it, I ued to hear a noise that sounded something like an air pump or something. This would usually stop after a minute or so. Today, when i started it, it made a low whining noise and then started grinding.

Does anyone know what this noise could be? Its not the cooling fans, because they are stopped and i still hear the noise.

Secondary air pump just died probably. It should sound kinda like a vaccum cleaner when you first start it.

 

Yeah, I was thinking it was an air pump too. Anyone know where it is located and if I can just disconnect it? Or is it something that I should replace right away? It only runs for about 1 minute when I first start the car if its cold.

Its under the car on the passenger's side i think, you can just un-plug it but you will fail emmisions.

 

could also be condensor bearing going, i had mine fail on my last car, itll just grind away see if you can make any AC. If you can then its not that
