I have the same problem too, although my cupholders must have cancer as it has spread to the back seat as well.......I can't get the cup holders from the rear arm rest to pop out either..........I think my car is trying to tell me something.....don't drink and drive!!!!!!
And don't even get me started about the center cup holders in the front arm rest..........what was Audi thinking........I pulled those things out day 1.

Damn cupholders
Both my cupholder and my friend's cupholder are stuck in our B5's. You'd think they'd be able to make a cupholder right... especially ones that cost $100!!! And what's with the tiny *** cupholders in front of the arm rest?? I could maybe fit a dixie cup in those. Dear Audi: We're Americans, we're fat, we need larger and more functional cupholders!! Get it done.
I am gonna try this credit card idea though, but even a screw driver couldn't pry mine out so i dunno what good it will do.
