Default Tach issue..

Hey guys, just signed up to AF!

Just picked up a '98 A4 Quattro 1.8t (aeb), 5 speed. Love the car and drive, although stock and relatively under powered ( see username) this car is awesome!

After picking up the car, i drove 4 hours back home and had time to notice its bugs....

1. Temp gauge erratic...figured that one while searching here,
2. CV joint vibration when accelerating in slow speed turns....somewhat figured out on here

Here's the real issue:

Tach is not reading right. Idles fine at 600ish rpm, but cruising at highway speeds(75-80mph) in 5th it revs at 2200? Sitting at idle, if i bring the revs up slowly, i can barely bring myself to get it over 4k (sounds more like 5200-5600!). I'm actually a licensed tech, so i have a bit of an idea what 4k revs sounds like...
just wondering what speeds/rpm relation would be on this...

Any input appreciated,

Thanks

600 rpm is low for idle. you should be at around 900 or so. at 75-80 mph I'm at around 3500 rpm or thereabouts. no idea where to begin looking for the problem, can you have it vag'd?

I have the same problem, except at 60 it only shows 2000, and its supposed to be around 3200 or so. My red line is 4700-4800 when I know its 7100 (chipped). It has to do something with the cluster Adaption. Check if your cluster wasn't replaced, I only have that on mine because I replaced my cluster due to my old one being faulty.

Is there a way to adapt the cluster? Via vag-com maybe, it also feels like my speedo is off at lower speeds (10-40mph).

Thanks for the replies

The first thing would b to run tests using a vagcom on the instrument cluster.

I have access to one, that'll be my first step.

Thanks.
