Default Thermostat location?

I searched and couldn't really find anything. I have a 97 A4 1.8T and this morning on my way to school my temp gauge was pegged on cold. When I got off the freeway andgot into the city my temp went up between Cold and Normal. I'm guessing its a bad thermostat. It's kinda weird cuz the temp was fine last time I drove it.

Anyways, does anyone know where the t-stat is located? The only thing I found as that some people recommend doing the water pump and timing belt at the same time. Is it really that involved to change a t-stat?
