Default Thermostat replacement

Has anyone had success with changing the thermostat in a 2.8 5V without messing with the timing belt? I'd like to get my heater back without too much work.

I believe you can but it's not easy... here's a pic of the 12V engine but it's almost the same as the 30V engine.

I see...not looking forward to all that work for just a thermostat. Prolly ought to do the whole timing belt thing while I'm in there, huh?

Any idea what temperature the computer needs to see to go into closed loop? (Just realized that maybe my 21-22 mpg highway may be because the computer is runnning in open loop the whole time). Sound reasonable?

I would suggest doing the whole timing belt as you don't want to do this service for a long time again. Not sure on your second question.

Thanks for the info. I've never done a timing belt job before, but guess I've got to start learning sometime.
