Thinking of getting an A4, need advise
Hi,
I'm starting to shop for a new car with a budget of around 15k (Canada). I started out by looking at ads for a VW GOLF GTI but then I realised that for the same price I could get an Audi. I think the A4 is one of the best looking car out there. I went to this place last night to snoop around (because they had 4 Audis) and damn they look nice. I plan on doing some test driving but before I would like to know a bit more on Audi.
here is the add : "2000-2001. Lots to choose from. in 2000, 2.8 QUARTER black on black, 75K! $14,995, also available in 2.8 QUARTER, green on black leather, 88K! $14,995, also in 2.8 QUARTER, silver on black, 100K! $15,995. And 1999 2.8 QUARTER wagon 7 passengers, $15,900 also in 1.8T we have 2000 silver on black leather, 108K! also 2001 black on beige, 5 speed, 90K! $19,995, loaded. Certified E-tested, warranty. Come and choose."
I don't know what should I look for ? Arethose years good years ? Are those good deals ? I really like the silver at 15, 995 $ (i think it's an S4!?)
What engine is better ? the Turbo or the V6 ? (i think that's correct)
What problems can I have ? What should I ask to the dealer ?
Another thing that bothers me is people saying how much it will cost me when I'll need to do some repairs. Any good arguments ?
Thanks in advance everybody !
If you say I should go in a lower (years) model, It's even better for me and my wallet.

you mean quattro. if its a 2.8 its not an s4.
the 1.8t has more potential. get that one.
repairs will be expensive.
and ask the dealer when the timing belt was changed.

I bought my 2000 1.8T with 80K on it for $17500 CAD. Make sure you ask when the timing belt was done as sandman said. If it hasn't, ask them to drop the price by $1000 because it will cost you around that to get it done.
If you are going to get a 1.8T, make sure you see if you can get one with all the oil change records. This is very important as there are problems with the oil pump in A4s from 1996 - 2004 I believe. If you have all the oil change records Audi may cover any repairs.

Hmmmm...... The 1.8 does have more potential, but depending on how the previous owner took care of it, I think you would be better off with 2.8. I've heard more "bad" coming from the 1.8's than the 2.8's. I have a 99 2.8 and it run like a charm. Just some minor fault codes I have to get cleared, but that's about it.
Look on other websites too! Do a Google search on "Problems With Audi A4 1.8" or "Trouble With Audi A4 1.8" .... or something else to that nature. Whatch how many nasty remarks you'll see as opposed to the 2.8!!!!!

I have a buddy selling a bone stock 2002 GTI... 5 spd with leather, moonroof, foglights... it's fully loaded... has about 90K on it, and it's VW certified, so it's got bumper to bumper VW warranty until 120K! I think he'd do 16900, he's asking 17900 though. It's an awesome car... I LOVE the GTI leather seats! Just chip a GTI, and you will have a KILLER car... my brother has a chipped GTI, it's fast as hell... I think they are great cars. I'd take a chipped GTI over a 2.8 A4, I think... depends on what you're looking for in a car, I guess.
It depends if you wanna work on it ..if so then def. get the 1.8T great engine mixed in with a great chassis...but ask about the timing belt like everyone has said. Good Luck!!
