Timing Belt Tensioner Failure
My 1999 A4 1.8 engine was really noisy. Car was towed to the dealer and they said that the timing belt tensioner failed which caused the belt to "jump a tooth." Rather than just replacing the tensioner and timing belt, they want to spend 8-10 hours ($1000) to tear engine apart and check for valve/piston damage. Does anyone have any experience or an opinion on this?
You have to be really careful with that stuff man. My 97 A4 just did the same thing but im not lucky enough to have no valve damage. Imgoing to have to spend a couple of days tearing the head off then take it to a machine shop to have it machined and new valves put in it, plus the cost of a new tensioner and timing belt. Make sure you replace that every 60k. The techs at the dealer were just making sure you werent in my situation, this is a common problem with audis.
