if your buy your timing belt supplies from www.blauparts.com you can rent the tool kit from them for 35$

there are only 2 tools required ( support guides 3369 and twin pin adjuster and the tensioner matra V.159 )

the 1.8, one can do the belt without the tools, but you need to be adept with the VW/Audi engines. I use to do my 1.8 with basic tools and my hands, just like Dan said. Just mark everything, count the teeth, and put the new one back on, COUNTING THE TEETH AND CHECKING THE MARKS--THE ORIGINAL MARKS YOU PUT ON THE OLD BELT, CRANK, AND CAM(S). Count those teeth like 3, 4, even 5 times prior to even thinking abou cranking that engine when done COMPLETELY......I MEAN COMPLETELY. Otherwise, say goodbye to your engine. You will need a head job.

HOWEVER, if one does the 2.8, 12 valve or 30 valve, then one needs to hold the two cams somehow. I say somehow because you might get creative. I DO NOT recommend it. USE THE TOOLS! I warn about the 2.8L. Unless you have experience skipping the tools scene, use them. I suppose, if I was going bankrupt or something, that I would think about doing my 2.8L without the tools, but you can find the tools for about $100.00--with the crank and cam lookers. You don't need a special cam puller and that #$.. Just use a regular cam puller, it doesn't make a difference.
