i dont think its so obvious because usually in automatics the choices under "D" are low gears for when you have a heavy load. i was thinking "S" was for snow... so yea not sooo obvious, also considering that there is already a manual mode a.k.a. tiptronic and i figured that was already the sport mode.

My initial misconception when I bought mine was that if the shifter had an "S" on it, the car was a Sport model. No correlation. 3-spoke steering wheel, nicer wheels, and suspension make the Sport Package. Personally, I think "S" mode is unnecessary. If I want higher performance, I use tip or focus on when to press the accelerator, versus just flooring it.
