Default Torque Converter Switch off

HI everyone,

I have 2003 A4 quattro 3.0 ran about 89K miles. I had Check engine sign on for over 2 years and after I checked with dealer they say, my "torque converter switch is off position". But sometimes check engine sign goes off and comes back when I hit about 30-40 miles. I do have slight jerk changing 1st to 2nd gear. I had to change my head casket 2 years ago, replaced water pump twice within 2 years and timing belt. Torque converter switch, how does it work? and do I have to change it or something I can do myself? Will it hurt my engine again?
