Default Totalled my A4 :(

crashed it

A car with 2 adults and 2 kids blew through a stop sign crossing a rural highway and I T-boned him in his left rear quarter. I had just enough time to steer a tiny bit and hit him with my right front. He ended up rolling and landing on his tires, while I spun out. All my right side airbags deployed. Fortunately nobody was injured.

Everything behind the A pillars is fine on my car ('01 1.8T), and amazingly all the doors and trunk open and close like new. I never appreciated the safety of my Audi but in retrospect I am impressed by the crash worthiness.

The Xenon headlights even still worked, and when I came to a stop I found that my flashers were on as well as all the interior lights. Amazing car, I'll miss her.

The funniest part is that 2 ambulances responded. Shortly thereafter 2 big flatbed wreckers pulled up which I thought were a bit large for the crashed cars. Ended up both ambulances had to be flatbedded away (you can see on in the last pic), while 2 regular wreckers towed the cars. Thank God nobody needed rapid transport!

Insurance company is closed 'til Monday so I don't know the settlement, but I'm looking at my brother's 2001 (same year) A4 Avant 2.8 (75K miles), a local 2000 A6 4.2 (133K miles), my brother-in-law's 2008 Infinity G37 Sport ($$), or try and find a clean S4 Avant with the 2.7T or 4.2. Any input from owners of such cars, or general advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I buy the 2001 Avant I am tempted to buy my car back from the insurance for all the compatible parts, and the brand new tires I just installed. In fact I had just dumped over a grand into it fixing everything up.

a little body putty and some minor respray and.......

j/k. glad that you are OK and that your car did its job to protect you. should make all of us feel better about choosing Audi.

If I were "shopping" I think I would look for a B5 S4 (the Avant would be totally sick). There is soooooo much potential in the 2.7T, unfortunately with all that potential comes the potential for horrible, frustrating, expensive problems. I think it would definitely be a project car, not a daily driver.

good luck

Thanks guys.

Can't appreciate enough how my car crumpled to absorb the impact. Hate to think what could have happened in a lesser car.

Thanks for the advice 02A6Beau, my dream car would be a S4 Avant 4.2 with manual trans, as long as insurance is affordable. I understand it's reliable as long as maintenance is timely.

My bros 2001 Avant 2.8 will be cheap, and has low miles (75K), but not tuner-friendly.

In any case it will be my DD, so I'd want decent reliability.

Does anyone know if the H&R springs on my totalled 2001 sedan can be used on the same year Avant? I think it's a couple hundred pounds heavier but not sure about how weight distribution would affect it.

ThatRetardedKid, sorry but I decided not to buy it back from the insurance co. @ $950. It was a quattro though.

Got my next ride lined up, an '03 S6.

Yeah, it was a tough call between the 2.8 Avant and the S6. All things practical steered me toward the 2.8, but I really wanted to drive a B7 S4, so the S6 was the middle ground.

Also with the crunching sound of impact still ringing in my ears I figured a bigger, heavier car would be safer. Fortunately my kids weren't riding with me but I'd rather be in the S6 if it happens again.

Don't think I'll mod it much unless parts need natural replacement, but I am tempted to put some springs on it and some A5/S5 wheels. The S6 is coming with clean 17" Avus rims, but mounted with new Blizzaks. So unless I want to dismount them next spring for summer tires, I'll get a set of summer rims/tires. I've been searching the threads and it seems like I can go up to 18 or 19 X 8.5, ET32 without problems. I really like the 19" double or 18" single 5-spoke A5/S5 rims. If anyone's got some compatible rims for sale shoot me a PM. They don't have to be exacly these rims, just very clean and high quality in 17 - 19", 8 -8.5" wide, 30-35 offset, 5 X 112.
