I'm not an expert on audi transmission s. But as a rule with most cars (especially automatics) you need to get the same exact tranny.. Automatic transmissions controlled by the computer and it isn't likely to be comparable with another transmission.

They started running CVT transmissions in the 1.8l variants in '02 (I believe)..

If you were to do a search of the forum I'm sure you can find the information your looking for. But as a rule transmissions are not interchangeable ..

Don't worry, I'll search for you.. It looks like any quattro transmission from your body style will be a direct replacement for your transmission. You might have to swap out your speed sensor and torque converter (possibly mounts/braces?) if you go with a 2.8 variety.

Here is a quote that I thought you might want to read..

Just did this swap and it's cake walk, everything mates up fine, you just need to swap the trans mounts over and make sure you remove the speed sensor on the top drivers side of the trans, otherwise removing the oil filter wil be a HORRIBLE experince"
^hes speaking of swapping in a 2.8 quattro tranny

Also

Just as an update, for people that didn't know. The casing is all the same, speed sensor are different so as the Torque converter.

For internal parts, gearing are all the same within 1.8 and Vice-versa with the 2.8. Internal parts may differ, for xyz reason, you just need to use a used one from any other matching trans...can be from either a 1.8 or 2.8.

I just completely dismantled my 5hp19-FLA for a rebuild, interesting project.

I highly doubt you'll find a online how to for free.. The Haynes manual (you can purchase from just about any auto parts store) is pretty comprehensive for most home mechanics.. They're about $25..

The best shop manual for these cars are the Bentley manuals.. But your looking at about $125.. -although it is VERY detailed..

I recommend anyone who worked on any vehicle have at least a Haynes manual to reference.. I usually read about whatever I'm going to fix several times (days in advance) before I even lift a wrench.. Unless its something simple of something I've done before..
