Default Voltage

As the temperature is falling here in the NE, the voltage registered on the voltmeter seems to be rising. Now that the temp is 10 degrees, the voltmeter reads over 14V.

And no, I haven't gotten out my digital voltmeter to double check.

Anyone else have this going on? Don't know if I need to get a new voltage regulator.

thanks

Perfectly normal. When it's around zero, my voltmeter shows ~14 volts.

mine does too. 14 is optimal. if you want autozone or another auto parts store will do it for free. if your battery checks out it could be the alternator. *Knocks on wood*

Hey guys. My 99 2.8Q also shows the voltage above 14. Never did on warmer temperatures though. Hope it is normal and not nothing else.

Batteries are much less efficient in the cold weather. The 14 volts you are seeing is the voltage from the alternator charging your battery. This is PERFECTLY NORMAL.

Finally found specifications for the alternator. Up to 14.5 volts is within specifications for the Audi. Above that, the voltage regulator is likely failing. Mine reads 14.27V, so I'm OK.

Interestingly, I couldn't find the information in my Bentley, and had to go look in my Haynes manual.
