Warped Front Rotors - When to get fixed??
My steering when shakes when I brake at high-speeds. Last time I had it at the dealership, they told me that my front rotors were warped and that sounds like the right diagnosis to me. They wanted $425 to put on new front rotors. Should I get it done at the dealership, or can somebody recommend a cheaper place to have it done. Would trying to save a buck and going to a place like Midas be a bad idea? After all, it's just replacing some rotors, so it doesn't seem like there would be too much they could F up. Any suggestions on how I can get the job done right for less than $425?
Do it yourself and buy the cheapest rotors you can. Some say the brand matters, but in my experience the chinese ones are as good as expensive ones. Don't turn the rotors either, you can buy new ones for about the same price.
Haha, DIY. Man, if I tried that, I guarantee I would rear-end somebody at the first stop light I came to. I have NO skills whatsoever and I don't think a safety item (like brakes) is something good to learn on. But based on what you guys are saying, I shouldn't be worried about paying a premium for dealer service and a cheaper place like Midas should do just fine?

I was told the same thing about my rotors only they wanted to turn and resurface them for like $400. They are charging you $400 for just the front? I went and bought front and back Zimmerman crossdrilled rotors for $280 from evolutionsports and put them on in 1 hour. Save yourself the money and diy.
I recommend DIY. I used to have the same problem on my Audi 80 with vibration at high speeds. I'm not a big fan of vented discs, but they do perform well though, but you have to be careful that no crap gets in them as they can be prone to warping. Also check your balancing & tracking as this helps too. When it came to listening how much the dealers charge, I was so frightened especially in the UK, I thought my wallet was going to melt. As I have experience with changing brake discs & pads, it's not that difficult really, just a little common sense helps.

(if you can get them where you are?? sometimes its not but the net works wonders for delivery.
