Default water guage query

Hi guys wondered if someone can help me here. i own a 2002 A4 1.9TDI.... in the last couple of days i have noticed that the water temp gauage (far left side of the dashboard stays at the 50 mark. when i drive it for a while its still sits at 50. when i turned off the the engine and restartred it again it went to the correct 90 mark amnd stayed there. today i did the same it stayed at the 50 mark all the way to work turned it off and it went to 90 again stayed for a while then went back to 50.....

is this a faulty part??? the computer is not flagging anything is wrong so it must be an instrurment problem. can anyone let me know what this could be and is it a vital thing to fix if the computer is not telling me it is.

ECT sensor my friend. go to the dealer and get the part number then order it online, not really sure if the parts on a diesel are the same as they are here on petrol cars in america. these go out quite often, i had the same problem in my 2.8, audi was charging 90USD for the outdated black top sensor, i got the newer blue top sensor at my local auto parts store for 11usd. i would imagine you need the green top sensor. also get this done because this makes the car run lean which will use excessive petrol and can lead to emmissions problems.
