Alright so in the past like two week I have been hearing some weird noise coming from my engine. It is kind of worrying me. When I start up the car, this like "errrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise starts going on for like 20-30 seconds and then I put it in gear and it goes away. My dad said its just belts but I don't think belts are supposed to do that, I mean I'm not a mechanic but...... that just doesn't seem right. Any help is apreciated. Thanks.

Probably belts maybe your alternator is going or your battery is getting really low and the alternator has to work extra hard to catch the car up

 

it could also be your starter

 

Could be a bearing in a pully.. Could be water pump.. My guess is that it is belt/roller/pulley related if the noise goes away when under engine load.

 

So if its just some belts, is it important? And no my battery is fine.

Maybe ill just bring it to my mechanic, haha what an idea!

It could be power steering pump too... I mean I guess it is all in how you interpret the "errrrr" If you could isolate the noise a little better it would help. Like open the hood, remove the plastic, fire it up and give it a good listen. Power steering is a really dull errrr, higher pitch would be belts, and more of a grind or click would be pulleys. Does it sound like the whine of a supercharger ? Most noises are important because a timing belt seizing will wreck your whole engine, a serpentine may take out parts as it breaks loose, a seized pulley could cause all kinds of damage and a power steering pump caught before you wreck it is worth 700 for parts.
