What I think is "play" in the trans. Any help?
Hello everyone I have a 1997 A4 2.8 12V 5 speed. It has 121k miles on it and I purchased it in December of 06. A few months ago I have been feeling what I like to call "play" in the lower gears one being the worst and getting better as the gears increase. This is hard for me to explain in words so I will give it a shot. I’m riding along in 1st or 2nd and I’m going at a consistent speed, I take my foot off of the throttle and there seems to be a lag, like the engine begins to slow and then about a half a second later it seems like the car catches up with the engine and becomes one again, the same type of lag happens when I accelerate. My first guess to this problem was that my clutch was bad. I thought this because I learned to drive a stick in this car so I really gave it a hard time when I was learning, also when I’m accelerating fairly quickly and go from 3rd to 4th some times I can feel the clutch not engaging fully for a second or two (this is probably my fault though). Then my dad said it might be that my engine mount is loose, one of my other friends told me that the gear bearings in the trans might be worn out or my throttle could be messed up some how, and finally a guy from work said that I might need transmission fluid. I know this is hard to visualize without actually driving the car for yourself but any insight would be very helpful to me.
Thanks,
Rich
