What is this NOISE!? RESOLVED!
Try to distinguish between the "normal" vavle tap noise, and this rattle that Ive been dealing with. When the camera gets closer to the intake mani, the rattle noise is singled out. If I put my ear right up on the manifold, the sound is most audible there, but it seems its coming from under the valve cover and echoing into the intake mani. For the longest time I believed it to be a noisy waterpump, but I dont think so anymore. It started over a year ago, and is starting to become more pronounced. What do you guys think? A sludge horor story in the makes? Im a good boy and run full synthetic every 3k miles, with larger oil filter. Im currently in the process of a seafoam crank case treatment (already did the intake mai treatment, and no change in sound). About another 20 miles to go before I change the oil. Cant hear it while driving/in cabin at all, no drivability problems, and no fault codes.

It actually sounds worse in the video, but youll definately get what Im trying to describe... Dont mind the smoke, Im trying to quit [X(]
Also, the noise doesnt get louder with engine speed. In fact I think it gets less loud, or maybe just drowned out by the normal engine sound at 2k+ rpms...

Are you sure it's coming from the intake? It almost sounds like a faulty tensioner or a pulley. I'm sure you would have checked all that already though which leaves me with no clue. does the speed of the rattle increase when you press on the gas?
Its definately not a tensioner/pulley thing. Thats what I thought at first though, associated with the waterpump, etc. But its coming from on top of the engine under the valve cover, and seems to echo in the intake mani. I know there isnt anything mechanical in the intake mani that would make a noise, the throtle body wouldnt do that, so ive sort of pin pointed it to the valve cover area/top of engine. Not the rear though, the cam chain area sounds normal. I noted about the engine speed, etc. in the original post.
Special thanks to Acetrebo for making me pay closer attention to the noise, and realizing its not the water pump. Its amazing what a couple beers will do to our tech/problem finding skills [sm=alcoholic.gif]

have you taken of the throttle body and looked inside? Maybe the little door inside there is loose or something is gettting knocked around in there. It's pretty constant though. Hmmm, I'm stumped w/o pulling it apart.
u might wanna pull off the valve cover gasket and check the camshaft. something like this was happening in my friend's durango but his engine was too loud to hear the sound correctly. he eventaully too the valve cover gasket off and he saw that his camshaft was rly messed up at one end so he changed it and it went away.

true, maybe take off your valve cover and cehck all your valves and the cam shaft while your at it. I was looking at this picture and any of those things may cause the noise other than that ihave no idea. wish i could help more.
man that pic makes these engines look simple. this may bea stupid answer but did you check the spark plugs? it almost sounds like they might be misfiring, but i could be hearing the wrong noise.
