Can anyone tell me what a v belt is? It is mentioned in my service manual. Is it the timing belt or is it another belt?

When I bought my car it had 127,000 kms on it, I rang the previous owner and they advise they changed the timing chain!!! but wasn't sure if the v belt was changed. Is there such thing as a timing chain? and if so is it different from a v belt.

I am going to try and call the service centre that service the car around the 90,000 to 100,000 to see if they have a record of what was fixed as the service book was filled out that a service was done but it didn't specifiy exactly what was done.

Is there anyway check if the timing belt and tensioner etc has been replaced, or is it such an big operation to check that you should just replace it anyway?

Your car does not have a timing chain, it has a timing belt. Yeah you can remove the timing belt covers to inspect the belt for cracking/wear, but it's not 100% accurate. If I were you I would have the service done, odds are it hasnt been done anyway at 127km.

 

The V-belt and Ribbed belt should be replaced at 80,000 mi. That is 129,000 kilometers. These belts are visible in front of the engine.

 

I'd suggest changing at 60-70k miles myself, as i've seen too many people have a destroyed engine around 70k.

Well you typically don't just change the accessory belt alone. You usually change it when you change the timing belt/water pump, etc. That usually costs anywhere from 500 bucks at an independant to 1200 bucks at the stealership.

 

Well i did change my timing belt and water pump at the stealership (AUDI) in JUNE 2004. I dont think they changed that at that time. Crap I should have done that too. [:@]. I paid $1200 CANADIAN DOLLARS for it because i also had some sort of oil leak. They fixed that too and since then, THANK GOD, no leaks. Remember the problems I used to have guys, after that no probs except that stupid WHEEL BEARING NOISE in the rear right is killing me. JEST how long do i have to change that?

 

I wouln't delay too long, I think you can do damage to your hub if you wait too long.

 

crap...cause before when i used to hear it when driving straight...and i still do, but when i used to turn right on a curve it woudl go away, now when i turn slightly to the right the noise goes away however, i hear another noise after it...all comming from the rear right area
