When the engine is cold....
Hi all,
I have problem with my 2002 A4 1.8T. When I start the engine cold there is a very load ticking like the valves.
But the interesting thing is that this noise goes away exactly after 50secs after starting the car. No matter what the engine temp is.
And the way it dissappears is as if some thing is switched off after 50secs. It just dissapears. Doesn't get quieter or anything just vanishes.
Any idea what it is?
Thanks

Woow fast replies thanks....
I am using 91. I read something about an air pump that can do this. It works only on cold start for emmission purpuses. Anything about that?

Wont be the gas. Not for that period of time. It would normally not go away ... or it would just quieten down a bit. It sounds like a seal on your oil pump may be going so it struggles to get the oil to the top of the motor.
Hmm my next post would be about the burned oil smell that I get after hard driving. I guess these could be related.
Dealer has fixed my crank shaft seal couple months ago an I was thinking that the oil smell was the residual oil but maybe its this. How can I check this?
Would the car warn if the oil pressure is not good..

What temeperature is cold?
Depending on what cold is for you, it could be the oil recirculating. My benz used to do the exact thing when it was cold, but once the oil recirculating it stopped.
If the dealer replaced the cam shaft, it could be that your timing could be off slightly. That would also explain the burning oil scent.

What type of oil are you using? You should have audi check it especially since you still have it under warranty.
If you have a torque wrench I would check out how tight the bolts are on the cover. Also the burning oil smell could be oil that spilled onto the exhaust mani when they changed the oil.
I'd check the engine bay to make sure that everything is clean.
If the weather drops below 60 at night then I could see it being a recirculating issue. Do you park your car outside/inside?

You will know if your engine isn't timed properly as it will run like a complete bag of dog turds. If you have a thick oil in you motor anything over a 15w then you could experience problems. Although 60 isn't that about 20 celsius? To give you a rough idea, I usea 15w mineral based oil at 10 degrees celsius so I really doubt it will be that. Also you should not have residual oil burning after 2 months... that my friend is called an oil leak. I can recommend what I did to mine to flush all the **** out, and although everyone will disagree, it does work.
1, go buy a bottle of kerosene, which is 100% hydrocarbons and pour 400ml (dont know the conversion sorry) in the top of your engine when cold (where you put the oil).
2, let it run for 10-15 minutes until hot always watch for the oil light. (If that comes on turn off immediately)
3, let the engine sit for an hour or two (important) & then drain oil into a CLEAN container while your on even ground, slightly tilted to the left & forward if you can but flat is ok. Replace oil filter with a genuine oil filter and a 10w or 15w oil. That will get rid of ANY sludge that may have built up.
4, check your drained oil and look for chunkies.
5, start engine for 20 seconds, turn off then start again & if your lifter noise is still there then i think you have a seal which is in effect, an oil pressure problem.
Remember your oil light only comes on when the pressure is really really low.
