When the engine is cold....
is ur ac or heater on?
i wouldent be to worried, i get the wiredest sounds on a cold startup, just make sure u let the engine run and get all the oil and stuff get where it is supposed to be b4 you shut it off the last time its used during the day...
id only be worried if i noticed lights coming on in your dash (audi has a pretty good onboard diagnostic system) or if you loose power..

I've got the same problem going on as the original poster. School is starting in a couple weeks, so I'm going to ask the school shop teacher to check it out (he's also my audi independant mechanic), maybe bring it in to his shop.
I'm kinda tempted to to that kerosene thing next time I change my oil, because I am super paranoid about sludge. I'll wait and see if your engine is being replaced or rebuilt first

Nah my engine is running better than ever & have gone on long drives, short drives, hills & everything. I have done it on all my cars and never had a problem. I was reluctant to do it with the Audi but it loved it. DONT be tempted to buy an "engine cleaner" as they just put 95% hydrocarbons & 5% of other useless crap. It is the Hydro carbons that clean the sludge out & and as they are oil based there is nothing dangerous about it. . . . . Unless you put too much in.
Just to be clear my measurements were based on a 15w/w oil & I just did 1:10 ration (100ml of kero - 1000ml of engine oil) if you are running a 5 w/w I would drop it to about 2/3 that.
Anyway questions PM me

I had a similar noise when starting up, but I also had the same sound when shifting between in first and second gear. It turned out to be my Cam Adjuster, Pretty large bill...$1100

Just curious what your mileage was when you had this problem? I just bought a 2001 A4 Quatro 1.8T with 42K miles just out of warranty and took the car in for service to the dealer for a recall item only to find out that the noise that is happening when I start the car is also caused by a Cam Adjuster issue. The bill to fix it would also cost me $1100 bucks.
Looks like I unfortunately need to find me a good German mechanic in South Orange County, CA.
Anyone have any recommendations?
HI, DID YOU EVER find out what the ticking noise was? I have the same exact issue with my 03 Avant. The noise is definitely coming from the rear of the head. I can't tell if it's internal since the tapping noise goes away immediately after 50+ seconds. It really sounds like a soleniod/airvalve/hose is malfucntioning at cold start up. car has 50,000 miles and runs perfectly. NO DRIVEABILITY ISSUES AT ALL EXCEPT FOR THE tapping noise at start up. I'm using Mobil 1 15/30
it could be taking your oil pump a minute or so to get sufficient oil to the head. try running a thinner oil. thats not too expensive to try.
or listen closely to your injectors are they ticking. sometime injectors do that. but the 50 sec part is weird.

Thanks for the diagnosis. I'm not a mechanic but, I really think it's not an oil issue. As the first post from srk the noise Shuts off after 50 or so seconds. I had oil delivery issues w/ my 88 M5 and as oil got to the head the ticking gradually went away.....it didn't just stop abruptly. I really think it's the secondary air pump or a vacuum leak associated / cold start up.
