When the engine is cold....
If anybody is still following up on this post, I took my car to the dealer and they said they can't hear the ticking and it should be fine.
but after reading a little bit more I definatly feel like the secondary air pump is causing this problem. this pump is supposed to start working when the car is just started up and stop working 1 min after start up on cold starts. It has something to do with heating the cats faster for emission purposes.
some people have reported the pump might be going bad so making the noise. and all this makes sense to me. The pump is located at the passanger sidewall which is where I exactly hear the noise from.
Anyways I will take it in again after a year maybe this time they will hear/fix it.

My car does the same thing, when the engine is cold. A loud valve-sounding clicking sound which stops abruptly after about a minute (never timed it). It's only audible outside the car, I don't notice it when I'm in the drivers seat.
I've had cars that clatter on startup due to oil circulation in the past, but that isn't it. It's as if the ECU switches something after a minute and the noise stops. The secondary air pump could be it.
My car has only 24K miles on it so it's not age related. It seems to be a "feature".

ORIGINAL: ALL*AUDI
I had a similar noise when starting up, but I also had the same sound when shifting between in first and second gear. It turned out to be my Cam Adjuster, Pretty large bill...$1100
