would you buy car with a rebuilt 2.8?
hello everyone-
in my ongoing search for an audi avant 2.8.. I've run across a '98 with a rebuilt motor. They said the timing belt broke and Audi rebuilt the motor in 2003. Would you consider it or are there relaibility issues with rebuilt motors? Car has 78k and from the carfax it looks like the new motor has about 25k.
consider or keep looking???
thanks as always and happy new year to all
jim
Miles don't really seem to add up. They only put 25k miles on it in about six years and then put on 50k plus in the last three years? The timing belt really shouldn't go before 60k miles, and would probably last until 80k miles.
Usually, you shouldn't have to be too concerned about a rebuilt engine if it was due to the timing belt breaking, but I would be a little suspicious of it only because they say it was rebuilt so early at 25k miles. The only way the timing belt would blow so early is if something flew up into the timing belt and knocked off the timing causing it to ruin the valves.

at least you don't have to worry about changing the timing belt when you get it lol..
I'd definitely consider it. if audi rebuilt the motor, there shouldn't be any worries.

Call an audi dealer, give them the vin, and verify that audi did indeed rebuild it.
If so, go for it, the engine is just now broken in! I would trust it if audi did it, you're getting an engine with only 25k on it, not a bad deal at all.

sorry if that wasn't clear.. seemed from carfax that the timing belt went at about 50k, since then (2003) they've put on 25k.

Sorry man, totally misread your first post. You should be good then.
As others said, Audi rebuilt is preferred to some other shop doing it. Check into that, but otherwise you should feel pretty safe with the purchase.
