What year Audi A6? What engine and transmission? The cost depends on what is wrong with your transmission or torque converter and on the labor involved. The transmission may have to be removed from the vehicle.
One thing that may cause the transmission to fail is if water gets in to the TCM, from having leaves plugging the plenum drain in front of the windshield. When this happens, water may get inside the car on the passenger footwell floor and short out the TCM and ECM.

A6hcw,
There ain't no way in hell that you will replace a tranny without taking out the bad one.
ACH, go to your local tranny shop, ask them to give you a firm cost, pull, rebuild, reinstall. That could run to about 4 grand, if you go to the wrong shop.
Boneyard, maybe 5-1500 for a used one, but you are gonna pay for RandR labor. It ain't easy.
Cheers,
George
