Default "Service" message??

Just joined. And, I haven't found the string on the silly Service !! coming up on my dash, now that I've chosen to do my own oil changes. I have an OBD II reader, but it won't cancel the display. Please don't tell me I need a $300.00 tool to reset it. Any hints?? 2001 Audi A6 Avant 2.8 Denver, Colorado

Turn off the ignition.
Then turn on the ignition while holding down the right-hand button (near the speedo). "SERVICE!" will appear in the display.
Press the left-hand button until the SERVICE text is cleared. The display should show the next service interval.
Release both buttons.

It doesn't always work, some require you to use your scan tool. ( Or possibly a cluster fault )
