I have a 03 A6 3.0, I don't know what's wrong and don't own a engine code reader and can't drive it. When I turn it on it starts nice but I put it into gear and it won't move drive or reverse and the dash lights up like I have all the gears selected at once

 

That's usually the beginning of a story for an expensive journey ahead...
Without a scan tool it will be hard to diagnose what exactly is going on and where to start repairs - however one thing I can tell you is that your car has a transmission related problem. It could be anything from TCM to the transmission itself or some other electronic component (switch/sensor).
