Default 12v battery to test a saip

I'm looking to test my secondary air injection pump and i was told just hook a 12v battery up to it, can i just use my car battery? And I imagine i can't just use leads from a multimeter, or can i just use a smaller battery?

I'm just trying not to get shocked lol

I'd use a couple pieces of wire. They don't have to be too heavy. I have some with aligator clips on one end and probes on the other that I use for checking things out they are about 12 foot long in case I need to do something in the rear. I sometimes clip them to my multimeter when I need extensions
