1995 A6 quattro 2.8 Transmission problem
I have a '95 A6 quattro 2.8 with automatic transmission. For about a year it was revving up idling when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear at low speeds. Was a little bothersome, but I didn't think much of it.
Yesterday I shifted from reverse to D and the car stalled. when I turned it back on, the Anti-Lock light was on and it would not shift past the second gear.
Is there a chance that this could be an electronics problem rather than a mechanical one? I read about resetting the transmission. How do I do it on the Audi A6?
Thanks

For the 1995 A6, the ATF needs to be changed every 45,000 miles. You could have leaked out some ATF. The ATF filter may be so badly plugged, that the transmission acts up, because the ATF flow is disrupted. You can get a ATF kit from www.blauparts.com. If that doesn't work, then you may have damaged the transmission. To get the ATF fluid level to specification you need VAG-COM from www.ross-tech.com to measure the transmission temperature, and the instructions from the BentleyPublishers.com Audi shop manual CD.
The ATF and filter were changed about 20000 miles ago. It wasn't done at an Audi dealership, so I can't tell whether they put in the right fluid. I also recognized a slightly burnt smell coming from the engine in the last month. I wasn't sure whether that was cooling fluid or ATF. There were and there are no noises coming from the transmission, not even when it started misbehaving.
Any idea about the Anti-Lock light? I know they shouldn't be connected, but it came on when the transmission failed. Could that be an indication of a simple (or maybe not so simple) failure in the electric system? I also realized that at the same time the entire interior lighting system started failing. It stays on when the doors are closed until I really turn off every light seperately.
