Hello
Need little quick input.
Needing to know which is better. I looking at the 2.7 turbo. Or the 3.0 quattro.
Am i really going to see a power and speed drop if i don't get the 2.7T. I will mod with a chip.. But I know it hard to tell how well a person took car of the turbo and it having a higher millage then the 3.0. They will both be auto if that matters…
Ok hope some can give me a little input on the difference in reel world driving from the both. Thanks

They don't call it a "Three-Point-Slow" for nothing.

I have the 3.0 in a 2003 A4 MT6 and it seems like a fine engine, at 81k miles. A lot of forum members hate the 3.0 engine, but it's been fine for the 11k miles we have owned the A4. It is powerful enough for my daughter and cruises at 70-80+ no problem. It's acceleration is good; better than my wife's Milan I4. But, it's rated around 195hp versus the 2.7T 250hp (265 in the S-line). And a simple chip takes that closer to 318. You can take it upwards of 450 hp with turbo mods. I tend to worry about turbos eventually failing, which is a $3-8k repair depending upon whether you stick with oem or upgrade (recall that 450hp comment). Not such worries about the 3.0. However, both vehicles require regular maintenance and have an abundance of features, which means little things can fail. I have just under 170k on my A6 with original turbos.

Pretty much a matter of your personal preference.
they are both Audis, parts for both are expensive, labor is expensive if you're paying for it or a PITA if you are DIYing
I have the 2.7T and LOVE IT. Of course right now its sitting in the garage on jack stands with most of the front end in a pile in the corner, a bucket under the lower radiator hose, box of new parts in the other corner of the garage...
I'm currently taking a little break because I'm stuck, pissed and don't want to break anything that isn't already broke.
while I'm on it, anyone have a step by step for removing the viscous fan without the chopsticks?

Im one of those folks that dislike the 3.0L engine. I'll compile a list of pros and cons for you so you can make an informed decision.
2.7T
Pros:
1. Extremely strong internal engine build quality
2. Has very little problems internally with the engine that could result in a major cost of repair.
3. Has been proven to go well over 300k with still less than 6% cylinder leak down.
4. Easy to modify for huge power levels.
Cons:
1. Leaks oil from everywhere.
2. The turbos (ko3's) are ticking time bombs if you chip it, which can result in a very very expensive repair.
3. Maintenance is high, and the cost of repairs are steep.
4. Has issues with the torque converter.
3.0L
Pros:
1. Maintenance is relatively low.
2. Has decent power.
3. Can't really think of anything else....
Cons:
1. Has cat converter problems, uber expensive parts and labor to repair.
2. Costs the same or more to do the timing belt as the 2.7T.
3. Has torque converter issues.
4. Very loud cam tensioners upon cold start.
5. This might be the worst of it, the engines are developing issues around the 100k mark for wearing off cam lobes. Audi still doesn't know the cause but the repair generally consists of new camshafts and lifter buckets.
6. Less thirilling than the 2.7T
7. Gas mileage is terrible compared to the 2.7T
In other words, both engines can put you in the poor house if you don't keep a solid extra set of funds for repairs. The upside for the 2.7T almost balances out the downside.
The upside of the 3.0L is almost nill, except for little to no leaks resulting in less trips to the repair facility. That, and its much harder to work on than the 2.7T which never ceases to amaze me.
Edit: my pick would be the 4.2L over both of them.
