I have a 2000 A6 4.2 and I'm trying to replace the rear pads but I can't get the rear pistons to retract. I tried rotating the piston clockwise but it just spins and I don't know anyone who has a tool to borrow. I've heard it is necessary to press on the piston while turning but that didn't work (or I can't push hard enough while turning). Any suggestions of how to do this with standard shop tools or recommendations as to where to buy the tool?

Have you tried to rent the tool at AutoZone

 

I went to auto zone after $%^&ing around with it for an hour and put a $36 deposit (fully refundable)down on the tool and it took me about5 minutes to do it with the right tool, you do have to turn them while compressing them back in and the too worked like a dream. Once I had the tool it was back to taking longer to get the wheel off then changing the brakes just like it should.

 

Is there a step by step instruction for replacing the rear brake pads? Particularly a 4.2.

 

Hey, I just changed my rear brakes and rotors. That was the first time I had actually done a brake job and it was pretty easy. Here is a link for a brake change on an A8.
