Default 2000 A6 Avant 2.8--Opinions Needed Please

Hello to all. New to the site. A little background on me. I worked for Audi among other brands as a service writer and service manager in the early 90's and have owned a 4000s and a 98' A4 1.8t manual (which worked well).

My question at this time is what weak points or common problems are that I should look for on a 2000 A6 Avant 2.8? It hat 112k, orig. owner, minor wear and tear, needs tires, has had t-belt done recently, older couple own it, asking $6500 (which sounds high), no modifications.

Some other sights I have run across have given me some concern about possible transmission problems occurring. Can anyone tell me if this is a valid concern, and if so how to check it or prevent it?

My closest Audi dealer is at least five hours away. I try and perform most of my own repairs and get quite a few parts over the internet.

Any knowledge or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks from NW Montana

I just sold my '97 Avant with 153K miles on it to buy a newer one of the same. I was the second owner. I started worrying when i first got it that I was going to have Transmission Issues because the check engine light threw out a few transmission codes. That was over 30K miles ago, and one my mechanic cleared the codes, I had one other issue of concern, but it never amounted to anything. i hope that gives you some comfort... and maybe someone else will be able to tell you how to check and prevent. Good luck with it either way.

$6500 is too much -- $4,000 is closer to the right number.

As for the Trans - if it is a tip you'll need to be real careful...
Gisell's 97 was just a baby -
My 97 Avant now has 245+ K and still going strong.

I have 2000 Avant with 185k. No issues with tranny. My issues are: (1) small leak in gas tank's nipples at the top of the tank(normall stuff, but very expesive to fix), I'm living with it. (2) The alternator is sporadically acting up, it's time to replace it I guess, will get to it with next timing belt replacement, which I will do shortly. (3) I had to replace driver's side catalytic converter, not because it was clogged but because it split open at the flex connector, again costly part and labor. Other than everything you touch is very expensive I'm very happy with this one and will get another one once I drive this one to the ground.
