2000 Audi A6 4.2L.. things to expect??
Hi guys,
Im looking at a 2000 A6 4.2L black on black. My friends wants $4k for it. Question is, is this car reliable? What are popular problems with them? My 99 TL transmission is gone the second time already since it had that recall on it so I'm very tempted to buy this. Any comments about the car are appreciated. Thanks!

Is it reliable? It reliably breaks down, so, yes, in a perverse sense, it is reliable. It is also expensive. However, for $4000 you can't go too wrong, unless the transmission is about to go or the cross over pipe at the rear of the engine starts to leak around the two $0.05 o-rings. But, as nemohm said, we need details to be able to more directly disparage your contemplated purchase.
im also asking for the Audi C5 4.2 in general, not just "this car"
some background info: This car was bought from an insurance auction with ~60k miles. I have seen the car when it was originally bought, and the damage consisted only of the front bumper, hood, and fenders. No engine components/ radiator, or frame was damaged. When driving it, there are no odd sounds, the car idles perfectly fine, and when u floor it, there is no hesitation. The only problem with it is an o2 sensor needs to be replaced. generally i trust this guy since i bought two cars from him before and had no problems (except the acura tl with transmission problem but the recall on it was never done).

In general, the 2000 and 2001 model years have bad transmissions. More specifically, the torque converter seal dies and takes out the whole transmission with it. In general, the cross over pipe at the rear of the engine leaks from a couple of $0.05 o-rings and you have to pull the engine to replace them. In general the control arms die somewhere between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. In general, the timing belt needs to be replaced. In general, the range control will act up. In general, the drain under the battery clogs up and then water leaks into the passenger footwell where the TCU is located and ruins it. In general, the pixels in the display go bad.
Etc., etc., etc.
AS long as you have three grand in the bank for an emergency repair, you can't go too wrong with your purchase. You WILL have a tough time selling it if it has a rebuilt title.
Good luck,
Bob
