Default 2001 4.2 Transmission

Hello friends,

I currently own an 01 4.2 at 103,000K

For one day I've had the rough shifting 1-2 and slipping almost anytime with a heavy throttle.

Tiptronic/ sport mode stopped responding.

I have similar symtoms from previous posts and understand it might be the valve body.

I brought mine into to a very well known indy shop and they reported the transmission fluid was full, yet seemed to be burnt, with the beginning of a slight leak.

They referred me to another place and quoted me for $5200-5700 for a rebuilt transmission if I remember correctly, which supposedly is of better quality and a little bit cheaper than the dealership.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

------------------------------------------PREVIOUS POSTS-----------------------------------------------------------

"I dont have any leaks. All I have is shuttering and hard shifts/missed shifts at this point."

". . .very rough up and downshifts from first to second. I didnt have to reproduce the issue, i think the mechanic might have been able to but he told me from what i described it was the valve body and that its a common problems with audi trans, so he told me thats what he usually starts with. Im not sure if they replaced the filter, but I was charged for 7 quarts of audi ATF, so I know they at least replaced my fluid. This whole process made a hell of a difference. The trans shifts very smooth and is a lot more precise than it use to be. I would definately have them check your valve body, but be warned as I told you, its a $1400 part (warranty should cover it, mine did). "

I own a 2001 4.2 with 87K miles. I bought it at 85K miles and it had just had the transmission replaced at 84K miles with a used trans from a place in Maryland. The used trans had 70K miles on it and cost $2200 plus $900 to install. Not sure whether a rebuilt one is a better way to go for the long run. This one seems fine althought sometimes it is a little jerky from1 to 2 before it warms up.

You are getting into some expensive repairs. Have you replaced the timing belt yet?

Timing belt and all other regular maintenance are up to date ($1200 if I remember correctly).

Yes, so expensive in fact I've considered selling my soul, because I love this car so much.

So used -VS- rebuilt?

Any opinions?

Also, I've put on about 20K since I purchased the car. I drive the 4.2 like I would a manual, downshifting, using the engine to slow down or break. Is this bad practice?
