Default 2001 A6 2.8 steering problem

Hi,

I have steering problem with my 2001 Audi A6 2.8 quattro. Every morning when I started the car, the steering is very heavy. But when I drive the car for a while when the coolant temperature goes higher and or I started the car late in the noon when the temperature is higher the steering is back to normal. I am wondering if this problem is related to the coolant sensor or other sensor? Thanks.

Do you hear a moan or a groan when you turn the steering wheel while it is "very heavy"? Sound like the power steering pump or the steering rack has gone bad but check your fluid level as low level could give you the same problems. Make sure to use the Audi specific PS fluid or you kill the power steering rack.

Mine started moaning this morning as well, but it was a cooler than usual morning. I hope mine is just the fluid level.

Good luck,

Bob

I only hear the groan noise once. I will try to add more P/S fluid because I saw somewhere that the P/S fluid has to be 25% more than max level. Sounds like this is a very notorious problem with Audi. Thanks for advice.
