Default 2002 A6 2.7T clicking noise

Hi,

I recently got this car, and it's great all around, except for one annoying aspect - the clicking noise from behind the dash.

To me it sounds like it is coming from behing the light switches. There is no consistency as to when it occurs, sometimes I can drive for a while and not hear it, and sometimes it's there right away. It is a little softer and slower click than the turning signal - it happens during acceleration and stable speed driving. Sometimes I hear one or two clicks, sometimes it clicks for a minute with stable in-between intervals..

I took it to the dealer, and they deemed it "normal" relay clicking... Somehow I don't buy that - but perhaps I did not explain the problem to them in enough detail.

Any thoughts would be very appreciated.

Thanks!
Tk

There is a srealy and fuse panel on the bulk head right there. most of the big relays are on that panel. If you look under your dash at the top of your kick panel, you'll see it. Did you get the headlight switch cover recall done?
To check, open the fuse panel on the side of your dash and peek in/ there is a crumple piece behing the light switch (it's squiggly) if it has black plastic on it, you have, if not go to a dealer.

Ever figured out what this clicking was?

Yeah. It is the ABS relay, which I guess explains why it stopped clicking when breaking.

The guys at the dealer were not optimistic about relay replacement mitigating the issue, so they sound proofed it a bit. It's a lot better. Although, on a smooth road surface with everything off i can occasionally still hear it.
