Like any used vehicle, ask for service records and I suggest an independent mechanic check it out (one who knows Audis). I also have a 2003 A4 3.0 MT6 and it is a very nice vehicle. I bought the A6 5 years ago because I needed the extra passenger and luggage space, but I bought the A4 for my daughter. If I have to replace the A6 someday, I will probably buy an A4. It's a little smaller and a little less expensive, but has all the big car features. I can tell you I get about 23 mpg on the highway (70-75) and my daughter has made the same 350 mile trip and gets 25-26.

I would go with A6 3.0, especially if it's FWD. Statisticaly, the CVT tranny fails on A4 with 3.0L engine much often.
