2003 A6 4.2 overheating
My Audi started to overheat today when I sit in traffic. I know that the thermostat is very hard to replace. So I want to check other things first. I was going to flush the radiator however I can't seem to locate the drain plug. I also want to check the fuses and relays for my fans but can't seem to find those either. Can someone please help me?????
Same thing happened to me last month. Unfortunately not only is the thermostat a pita to get to it is also a POS! and fails at 40K intervals. If you go in there order a pump, thermostat and a t-belt with tensioner and rollers.
Heads up! The auxiliary belt or serpentine belt that comes with the blau kit smells like cat ****. It must be something with the rubber I had a floor mat in a Peterbilt that smelled like that. You may want to find a better source for that belt.

The drain plug is on the driver side right behind the driver's side fog light. You can see it if you remove the vent.
I have chagned the thermostat and it is a bit tough to get out but you can do it without taking off the timing belt. Just 3 bolts to remove the housing and force it out between the engine and the timing belt. Ideal to do the whole timing belt service if its near due but otherwise, not too difficult.

Sit there with your hood open and check if the fans are kicking in. There is no sense in draining your fluid if its full. Unless you have an air pocket in the system then that wont be your problem. Have you checked your oil? maybe its a head gasket problem. Although from what I gather thats not a common problem with this motor.
If i remember correctly one of them is belt driven and one is electric. make sure it doesnt kick in later on than the bigger one know what i mean? also i would be inclined to think that even just one fan could keep the temp down enough so it didnt overheat....
