Default 2004 A6 Key Fob losing programing

Hello, I am a new user and appreciate the resources you have here. I just picked up an 04 2.7T A6 and it only came with an aftermarket key. I ordered and then cut and programmed (by a locksmith ) a reconditioned Audi key fob ( new chip and battery allegedly). I can get all 4 buttons to work both with the one key in ignition, one in door locked then two unlock presses, 10 seconds between; and the outside door lock turn while holding lock button press, then unlock turn while lock button press. It works fine, then when I walk away and come back 5 min later it loses programming and needs to be programmed again. And so on in an endless cycle. Bad fob maybe?
I couldn't find this issue anywhere through a search.
Thanks in advance,

Tom
