Default 2005 A6 timing

Does a 2005 A6 3.1L have a timing belt, timing chain, or both? Thanks

But this article says it's chain driven:

The 4.2 has a chain, the 3.2 has a belt.

Yeah, you're probably right, since you usually are, but it is confusing. That article says that *both* engines (3.2 and 4.2) are chain driven.....?

I have an 05 4.2 that certainly has a timing chain. The generic A6 service manual that came with the car calls for the timing belt in the 3.2 being replaced at 75,000 miles. It is possible that the service manual is wrong, or has a typo, but it does seem to indicate that the 3.2 has a timing belt. However, the 2005 brochure for the 3.2 says that it has a "maintenance free chain drive timingbelt". So the mystery continues.

Here's the "official" 2005 Audi A6 Sedan Equipment list. As Kevin said, it states that both have a timing chain....?

Even if it does have a chain, how can it be maintenance free? Chains can still wear out and break. And what does chain drive belt mean?

Both the 3.2L and 4.2L engines have timing chains. The ONLY motor that still has a timing belt after the year 2005 is the 2.0T, the early model 4.2L A8's still have belts until they upgraded them to FSI 4.2L chain drive motors as well.

The chain would take well over 500 thousand miles before it would ever need service, its no standard steel chain.
