Default 2011 A6 Avant NOT THE USUAL rear light problems....Again

Hi Guys.
I am over in the UK I have a 2011 A6 avant. I had a problem with the rear right side lighting cluster last year, which was resolved by replacing the unit without further problems.
I have done lots of research on the problem I have but cant seem to find the answer. Its not poor ground wires.
I am an electrical engineer and have worked on cars and bikes in the past......... 1980s and 90s so looking at all the electrical kit in a 2011 A6 leaves me speechless.....and a feeling of deep inadequacy.
OK So the problem is....... The rear tail light warning lit up on the dashboard ( right side). When I checked it both the body lights and the tail gate lights are out.. all other lights in the clusters are working fine.
checked connections, checked local ground wires. No luck. the tail lights and brake lights are LED
what I have noticed is that when the car powers up the tail lights on the body light momentarily before the warning tone and dash warning comes on. The lights on the tail gate cluster dont light at all....... I duly disconnected the lights on the tailgate cluster and tried again but the lights on the body still didn't come on.
I have removed the trim on the tailgate looking for corrosion or damaged cables but nothing is poping out.
I have done a diagnostic (Vident i400 system) which says code ' 02935 right tail light - sporadic- 009 open or short to ground'
I believe there is a control module for the lighting circuits but I have no idea what I am looking for or if this is likely to be a suspect.
I don't even know what voltage I should be looking for on the LED lighting.... is it 12v or less ????
Help needed and appreciated
