Default 96 A6 2.8 engine swap

I am looking to replace my engine. I'm wondering what other possibilities, as far as models and years, I have in selecting a replacement. I got a 12 valve, could a 30 valve go in its place? What about wiring harness and ECU? It's a wagon and the tranny was rebuilt 2 1/2 yrs ago. I can get the engine code off the spare tire if its needed but these MI nights are getting cold! I really want to get my car back on the road before the snow falls.

you should be able to drop the 30 valve in there.

come on a 96?

I wouldn't put a new engine in my 02!

Is it possible to rebuild the blown engine???

If you must replace it, do yourself a huge favor find a 96 donor car with the same engine code so all of the parts match up that way you can also swipe some odds and ends that typically fail for spares. Heck I'll bet you'll need the blown engine for parts to get the donor running right!!!

If you need to challenge yourself and think your going to put a different model engine in and have it match your harness and ECM... Knock your self out! But that's not going to happen.

Think it over...

A 96 was a C4 so you should sitck with that model. When they redesigned the engine, they moved, modified or replaced many of the sensors, vacuum lines, electrical connectors and such. Also, and probably more importantly, any engine from a 96 is probably just as shot as your engine. Either allocate $1000 - $3000 to rebuild your motor or trade the car in on something newer. There are several newer A6s on the Detroit Craiglist in the $4800 - $5200 range.

If you need a good independent to rebuild your engine, let me know. I know of a guy...

Bob, I would really like the contact information on the engine rebuilder you mentioned. That sounds like the way to go. Thanks in advance.

do the guy a favor and suggest he put a 454 Chev big block in it.
It would be easier than changing motors!

...and will cost 2-3x the rebuild amount to integrate into the car to run right and pass OBD2 emissions...

We're in Michigan - no smog tests!!! Other than that, you are probably underestimating the costs!
