Next, pulling off the belly pan on the A6 and taking a gander underneath to see if I can determine where the episodic leaking of oil/transmission fluid/ hydraulic fluid is coming from.
You replaced the oil cooler o-ring, correct? If the oil still looks like its coming from that area, look a little farther up and to the left for the oil pressure sending unit (single wire, on the lower right front of the engine)... mine was leaking like a bandit costing a quart a week and a serious oil burning smell as the oil was blown back onto the exhaust... cost a few bucks at the local Autozone...

Default Oil/Fluid Leak

Thanks, one more time, Jim. Yes, I did change out the o-ring for the oil filter mounting and it's dry there. I haven't examined the oil sending unit, however, and will do so just as soon as the rain passes and the weather up here @8,0000' warms up! Stand by. . .

Default A4 Cruise Control

Hey Jim et al,
Out in SoCal visiting the A4 and my son who's attached to it! It's running great and I brought new plugs/wires/fuel filter/cabin filter/exterior trim pieces and am going to change out the O2 sensors on Saturday. Moreover, going to change out the oil filter housing o-ring that you've wisely counseled me to change on the A6.
Discovered that the cruise control doesn't work. Fuse is good on the side panel but I lack any other ideas. Some help as to what to check next?
Thanks again!

Default '96 A6 Query

Hey Jim et. al.!
Trust you're all doing well out there in Audi Land, as am I. Both the A6 and A4 are running great, the steering strut replacement of last fall went off without a hitch and everybody's happy.
However, I've now developed a noisy bearing in the A/C compressor, based upon the source of the noise. Fluctuates with the engine r.p.m. and it's definitely NOT the tensioner for the accessory/serpentine belt. It's brand new and I just now checked it. AutohausAZ wants a pretty chunk for a new A/C compressor so I'm not too excited 'bout replacing it and the freon, too! Anybody ever rebuild 'em or rebuild/chane out the clutch/bearing(s) on the front end of the unit. Can it even be done? Somebody built it originally so somebody, me, ought to be able to do the same, no?

Standing by. . .Thanks!

Wow... I don't know that one. You got me

However, I wouldn't think it would be too hard to rebuild.. The hardest part would be pulling the vacuum and replacing the dryer before refilling.

Do we (you) even know what brand/type of compressor it is? Looking around, there appears to be several: Denso, Behr, 4-Seasons, Artic Air, Before or After 12/95, etc...

Default A/C Comopressor

Hey All,
Well, the clutch/pulley assembly on the Zexel A/C unit finally gave up the ghost and, as a result, the clutch is shot and so I'm going to have to replace the whole shebang! Ouch! Anybody (Jim?) done this job before? AutoHausAZ doens't carry my vintage of compressor so I'm wondering if any of you out there like anybody else?
Ah, love this car!

My compressor is noisy as well, so I'll keep en eye on this.
If you find a way to rebuild it, then please keep us posted.
