'96 A6 Interfered With!
Here's a couple of resized pics of the car and driver
! You know, I wouldn't have purchased this particular car, the A4, were it not for my very positive and helpful experience through the timing belt repair job on my A6, thanks to this Forum!!!! Great help!

Maybe two Audis make a brace, I dunno
but here's a couple of snapshots of the two cars, both of which are powerfully and wonderfully wedded to this AudiForum!
Got a host of parts, used (Shokan) and new (AutohausAZ; Audi Dealer) coming for the A4 which will be installed out in SoCal next month as the boy's headed there by dawn's early light tomorrow
If I were 19-years-old and cruisin' the interstates in my "new" A4, I'd be in heaven and that's what all of us Audiphiles would hope as well

The boy's on the road west as I write but this morning @0430 hours
, the car's idling in the driveway and suddenly quits. Starts right back up and continues to idle along nicely, then quits randomly, as best I can tell. Idle control switch failing somewhere? Any thoughts? The only thing I've done to the motor is change out that timing belt, installed a K&N air filter, changed the oil/filter and reset/cleared the codes with the VAG software. Running fine otherwise. . .Any thoughts on this would, as always, be most appeciated!

K&N? I dont like those.. the Audi MAF is way to close to the filter that the oil covers it in a fine coat... especially if too much is used, which is usually the case...
Have him try and clean the MAF first off.

I've got some of that CRC MAF aerosol cleaner and will use it on those sensor wires. However, I would think that I'd get a Check Engine code if the MAF sensor were malfunctioning. I've had a K&N on my '96 forever and haven't had any problems. I did over oil the one on my '01 Burb, however, so appreciate your concern. Any other possible problems with idle issues?
Kinda hard to tell - have the wierdest problems
. The only 3 things would be Idle Air Motor, Fuel Filter, weak Spark. Or 'Air, Fuel, Spark'
You did say the car sat for awhile, right? I'd go after the fuel filter and make sure its flowing good and crud didnt get knocked loose from the tank. I know you changed it already, but still... Also look for any leaks that would drop the fuel pressure.
Was it humid out in the morning? Could be leaky plug wires..

Hey Jim!
Well, the boy arrived in North Hollywood last night around 9:30PM, safe and sound and apparently had an epic drive the entire 900 miles or so
. He reported no further idle problems on the trip and had plenty of bumper-to-bumper traffic in SoCal during which the car could have stalled. To me, this points to a possible clogged/clogging fuel filter, which, in fact, I've yet to change because I had to crawl underneat the car, pull down the filter from its moorings adjacent to the fuel tank, measure its dimensions, convert them into metrics, then order a new one from AutohausAZ!!!! It's supposed to arrive today or tomorrow with other parts. I've also thought of the plug wires and new plugs, neither of which I replaced and probably should, just to be safe. I'm heading out to SoCal myself, in a few weeks and will transport my tool box and a whole bunch of new parts to install on the car when I get out there
.
Thanks for your further thoughts on this and stand by for further reports. . .
Next, pulling off the belly pan on the A6 and taking a gander underneath to see if I can determine where the episodic leaking of oil/transmission fluid/ hydraulic fluid is coming from. This remains a periodic issue with odor coming from the car and then the occassional smoke. I suspect it'll get worse over time, which will help the diagnostic process
Maybe the steering rack? The heads are dry all around, so no leaking there. . . Havin' fun!
Say, did I ever post a pic of my wife's vintage/classis '74 BMW 2002tii? Take a look:
